The Backstory is a tool for clinicians who may struggle at times to know where to start. Initial sessions with new clients are often spent gently inquiring about our client’s history, their experience of themselves, and how they move through the world. The first sessions we spend with our clients allows us an opportunity to connect by learning more about the way they perceive their role and their sense of value/worth to themselves and others.  
 
Let this guide serve as a starting point and an invitation to thoughtfully expand the questions we choose to ask our clients.
 
Some of these questions may be difficult for our clients to answer without established safety in the therapeutic relationship.
 
I trust you to know when it’s too soon to explore a particular area and to loop back to it when there is a greater sense of connection and safety.
 
So, it's time to get more acquainted with your new client and learn about how they came to be who they are today and who they hope to be moving forward.
